We're very happy to announce that the UTSA Department of Anthropology has just hired Dr. Devin Flaherty (Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles, 2018) at the assistant professor level for a position with a specialization on the intersection of environment and health. Dr. Flaherty is a medical and psychological anthropologist who studies aging and end of life on the Caribbean island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Her research interests include care, experience, morality, phenomenology, and narrative. Her upcoming ethnographic project combines these interests with disaster studies and anthropologies of climate change to examine how the aftermath of Hurricane Maria is shaping possibilities for growing old and coming to the end of life both on St. Croix and in the growing ‘medical diaspora’ of older adults evacuated to southern U.S. states.
Welcome to UTSA, Dr. Flaherty--we're so happy to have you as a colleague!
