The UTSA Center for Archaeological Research wins prestigious award

January 18, 2019

The Center for Archaeological Research, which is affiliated with UTSA's Department of Anthropology, has just won the 2018 Texas Historical Commission Award of Excellence in Media Achievement. Clint McKenzie, a CAR employee and anthropology doctoral student, was key in the effort. He worked in partnership with UTSA's Department of History and Bexar County to create an online exhibit that showcases the use of historical Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for documenting local history. The collaboration resulted in a series of interactive story maps merging geographic data, visuals, and narratives to illustrate how the area’s natural and constructed environments have evolved. Topics covered include prehistoric archeological sites, initial settlement patterns of the Spanish colonists, the acequia system, farms and ranches, and the late-19th-century built environment. Please see some of the maps here.
